Of 223 open, permitted food places in Lafayette County, 209 hold an A as their latest state health grade, 12 a B and two a C. How to look one up.

Last checked Oct. 12, 2026. Grades come from the Mississippi State Department of Health’s food facility inspection search and its Lafayette County facility list. The grade definitions are from the department’s guide to inspection grades.

The Mississippi State Department of Health inspects restaurants, bars that serve food, food trucks, school cafeterias, day care kitchens and other food facilities in Oxford and Lafayette County, and grades each inspection A, B or C. The department’s grading system is designed so facilities show their latest result as a letter grade. Most places in the county hold an A.

What the grades mean

Grade What the inspector found
A No critical violations
B Critical violations found, and corrected during the inspection under the inspector’s supervision
C Critical violations found and not all corrected, or critical violations repeated from the last inspection even if corrected. The place is reinspected, and violations must be fixed within 10 days

Critical violations are those more likely to lead to food contamination or illness, the department says. If a violation is an immediate public health hazard, the inspector closes the facility. If a C-graded place does not fix violations in time, the state moves to suspend its permit.

Bar chart of the latest health inspection grades for 223 open Lafayette County food facilities: 209 grade A, 12 grade B, 2 grade C

  • 209 (94%) had an A as their most recent grade.
  • 12 (5%) had a B.
  • 2 (1%) had a C.

Nearly all of those latest inspections were in 2025 or 2026. A grade is a snapshot of one visit; a B or C often means the problem was fixed on the spot or at the follow-up visit. The state’s full list for the county runs to about 490 entries because it also includes expired permits and closed businesses.

How to check a restaurant

  1. Go to the state’s food facility search.
  2. Search by name, part of a name, street or city, or choose Lafayette County.
  3. Open the facility record to see every inspection with its date and grade, plus any complaints and enforcement.

The department also publishes a list of C-grade inspections by date.

Method notes

  • Grades are the state’s, not ours. We do not grade restaurants.
  • Our count uses the most recent graded inspection shown on each facility record; the state notes its data are for information, not enforcement, and some older records are incomplete.
  • Facilities on the Ole Miss campus are included, as are school cafeterias, hospitals and stores with delis.
  • If a grade looks wrong, call the Lafayette County Health Department.

What this means for you

  • Look for the letter grade on display.
  • A B means problems were corrected while the inspector was there.
  • Check the state site for a place’s inspection history before you book a big event.
  • Report a food safety concern to the health department.
