Where it is

The city’s historic districts layer draws the South Lamar District from the south side of the Square down South Lamar Boulevard toward Highway 6. Streets inside it, from OpenStreetMap, include South Lamar Boulevard, University Avenue, the first stretch of Old Taylor Road, Pierce, Fillmore, Buchanan, Johnson, Van Buren, Tyler, Hayes, Garfield, Lincoln, Taylor and Cleveland avenues, Grant Street, Beanland Drive and South 5th through 16th streets. It is in ZIP code 38655 and in Ward 3 on the city’s current ward map.

The Vision 2037 plan uses University Avenue between 8th and 11th streets as an example of zoning that does not match the historic pattern: most of the north side is zoned Downtown Business, the northwest part Two-Unit Residential and the south side Multi-Unit Residential. It says that stretch is mostly inside the South Lamar Historic District, with its northwest corner in the Depot Historic District. The city’s interactive zoning map shows the zone for a single lot.

What the historic district means for owners

Exterior changes in South Lamar go before the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, which also reviews the North Lamar, Depot and Jefferson Madison districts. The plan lists the issues facing these older neighborhoods as affordability, fairly dense housing without nuisances, preserving historic buildings and fitting new infill to the street. Our building permits and zoning guide covers the permit steps.

Schools

The Census Bureau’s school district map puts all of South Lamar inside the Oxford School District. The district groups schools by grade, so every student attends the same building for a given grade.
