Oxford is laid out around the Courthouse Square. The older residential districts spread north and south from it along Lamar Boulevard, the Ole Miss campus sits just to the west, and newer development runs out along the main roads to two bypasses: Highway 6 (U.S. 278), which crosses the south side of town, and Highway 7, which runs up the east side. The city had 26,086 residents in the Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey five-year estimates, with a median home value of $333,400.
What this means for you
- One ZIP code: homes in the city use 38655, so Zillow’s index gives one figure for every area here: $417,122 in August 2026.
- School districts do not follow city limits. Most of the city is in the Oxford School District, but some land inside the limits, mostly on the northwest side, is in the Lafayette County School District. Check an address with the Tax Assessor, 662-234-5562.
- No neighborhood school zones in the Oxford district. It groups schools by grade, so every student attends the same building for a given grade, ending at Oxford High.
How the town fits together
City limits. The city’s city limits layer reaches well past both bypasses, so a rural-looking road can still be inside the city. Inside the limits the city collects garbage twice a week and the Oxford Police Department patrols; outside them, Lafayette County does. Our town, county and neighbors guide explains who does what.
ZIP code. Every area on this page is in ZIP code 38655. The Zillow Home Value Index for 38655 was $417,122 in August 2026, up 3.3% from $403,970 a year earlier; the figure for the city of Oxford was $416,262. The index is a modeled typical value for homes in the middle of the market, not a sale price. Because one ZIP code covers the whole city, Zillow’s figures cannot tell these areas apart. Our home prices guide has the trend.
Schools. The Census Bureau’s school district map shows the Oxford School District covering most of the city. When we tested points across the city limits against it, about 94% of the city’s land fell inside the Oxford district, and most of the rest was on the northwest side, in the Lafayette County School District. Both districts rated A on the state’s 2024-25 report card. Oxford’s district groups its schools by grade, from Bramlett Elementary (K-1) to Oxford High (9-12), so there are no attendance zones inside it. See our schools guide for every school’s grade.
Wards. The city has six wards and one at-large alderman. The current ward map shows yours; our City Hall guide lists the aldermen.

The areas
Downtown and the Square
The Courthouse Square Historic District on the city’s map: the Square and the blocks of Van Buren, Jackson, Jefferson, Tyler and Harrison avenues around it. The Vision 2037 plan calls it the Urban Core and lists residential on upper floors among its uses. The downtown parking garage is the hub for OUT’s city buses. Downtown and the Square guide.
North Lamar
The North Lamar Historic District, north and east of the Square along North Lamar Boulevard and Jefferson, Madison and Washington avenues. The L.Q.C. Lamar House Museum is here, and the public library, Bramlett Elementary and Oxford Middle are just to the east. North Lamar guide.
South Lamar
The South Lamar Historic District, the largest of the three on the city’s map, from the Square south along South Lamar Boulevard and University Avenue toward Highway 6. Rowan Oak and the Ole Miss campus are just to the west. South Lamar guide.
Oxford Commons
The Oxford Commons planned unit development east of Highway 7, along Sisk Avenue and Commonwealth Boulevard. Oxford High and Della Davidson Elementary are inside it, with shops and restaurants near Sisk Avenue. Oxford Commons guide.
Molly Barr Road
The road from Jackson Avenue north to North Lamar Boulevard, past the police station, the City Shop, Stone Park and the city pool. Three OUT bus routes touch it. Molly Barr Road guide.
Old Taylor Road
The road southwest from South Lamar past Rowan Oak, William Faulkner’s home, to its own Highway 6 interchange and the city limits. The plan notes bike lanes on it and a large apartment project along it. Old Taylor Road guide.
Jackson Avenue West
The west side’s main road, from the edge of the Ole Miss campus to Highway 6, with Walmart, CVS and three city parks nearby: Price Hill, Woodlawn and Garden Terrace. OUT’s Blue West and Orange routes serve it. Jackson Avenue West guide.
Other named areas on the city’s map
The city’s overlay layer also maps the Grand Oaks, Blackberry Hills and Leslie Court planned unit developments and The Lamar traditional neighborhood development. Grand Oaks, on the south side, takes in The Country Club of Oxford’s golf course, according to OpenStreetMap. The city’s Historic Preservation Commission also reviews the Depot and Jefferson Madison historic districts, west and northeast of the Square, which the plan describes but the city’s current map layer does not draw. Our history and landmarks guide lists the National Register districts.
How we built this
We used only areas a public source names and maps:
- Historic districts: the city’s historic districts layer (Courthouse Square, North Lamar, South Lamar) and the Vision 2037 plan, which lists Oxford’s residential historic districts.
- Planned developments: the city’s overlay districts layer (Oxford Commons).
- Corridors: roads the Vision 2037 plan names as reaching Oxford’s residential neighborhoods (Molly Barr Road, Old Taylor Road) or treats as a planning corridor (West Jackson), traced on OpenStreetMap and clipped to the city limits.
- Schools: each area tested against the Census Bureau’s school district boundaries; grades from the state report card.
- Distances: measured on the OpenStreetMap road network with the OSRM router. They are distances, not drive times.
We do not rank areas or describe who lives in them. Facts such as zoning, flood zones and taxes can differ from one lot to the next, so check a specific address with the city’s GIS hub and our property tax guide.
