Lafayette Elementary School is the Lafayette County School District’s school for pre-K through second grade. Unlike the district’s other schools, it is not on the Commodore Drive campus but on F.D. “Buddy” East Parkway. The county district serves the parts of Lafayette County outside the Oxford School District, including some land inside the city limits.

Principal

Principal Lee Gray, according to the school’s principal’s page.

Enrollment and teachers

The most recent federal count, from the NCES directory for the 2023-24 school year, is 778 students and 65 full-time-equivalent teachers, about 12 students per teacher. The state’s 2025-26 report card counts 54 teacher FTEs at the school.

Pre-K and kindergarten

  • Pre-K: children must be 4 before Sept. 1 and live in the county district. The school says there is no tuition and children are selected “based on need,” using a required academic screening and a parent questionnaire. Pre-K runs a full day on the elementary schedule. The district does not bus pre-K children, so families drive them. The 2026-27 application window closed in February, according to the pre-K page.
  • Kindergarten: a child must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2026, for the 2026-27 year and must live in the county district. Registration is online and needs a birth certificate, a Mississippi 121 immunization form, the last school’s withdrawal form or report card and two proofs of residency, according to the kindergarten page.

State report card

Lafayette Elementary earned an A for 2025-26, with 529 of 700 possible points, in the Mississippi Department of Education’s results file, released Oct. 15, 2026. An elementary school needed 457 points for an A this year. The Lafayette County School District as a whole earned an A with 703 points.

From the same file and the school’s report card:

Measure, 2025-26 Lafayette Elementary
Reading proficiency 67.0%
Math proficiency 74.2%
Reading growth, all students 82.3%
Math growth, all students 81.4%
Chronically absent students 21.4%

The school has no science score; for schools that do not test science, the state equates the score to the 700-point scale, according to the file’s notes. Mississippi grades every school and district from A to F, counting test scores, how much students improve from one year to the next, with extra weight on the lowest-performing 25% of students, and English learners’ progress, according to its guide to the system (PDF). Because the writing part of the English test was field tested in 2026, the state calculated this year’s grades from the higher of the 2025-26 or 2024-25 English results. The state says 2025-26 grades set a new baseline that “cannot be compared to grades for previous school years.”

Attendance zone

The county district runs one school for each grade band, so every district child from pre-K through second grade is assigned to Lafayette Elementary. Students move on to Lafayette Upper Elementary (grades 3 to 6), Lafayette Middle (7 and 8) and Lafayette High.

The district’s boundaries map (PDF) shades the Oxford School District area apart from the five county school board districts. Most city addresses are in the Oxford School District, where these grades attend the Oxford Early Childhood Center, Bramlett Elementary and Della Davidson Elementary. Confirm an address with the Lafayette County Tax Assessor at 662-234-5562. We found no boundary change approved by the school board.

Calendar and times

The pre-K page says student drop-off begins at 7 a.m. and the car rider line at 2:30 p.m.; the district did not post a full bell schedule when we checked. From the district’s 2026-27 calendar (PDF):

  • Thursday, Nov. 12: progress reports
  • Nov. 23-27: Thanksgiving break
  • Friday, Dec. 18: end of the second nine weeks
  • Dec. 21 to Jan. 4: Christmas break; Jan. 5 is a professional development day, and students return Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2027
  • March 8-12, 2027: spring break

The school’s website also links after-school care, which its pre-K page says is run by the YMCA for a fee.
